I cannot believe I never posted this! This is my monogram, which I designed over a year ago. I have always been fascinate with monograms — calligraphy, in general — but the idea finally came to me while watching an episode of the British Antiques Roadshow. It was so long ago, that I can't remember the details, but a gentleman of noble descent brought in something of his grandfather's, upon which was a monogram.
I had a few, low resolution images of from heraldic books, created by French master penmen, but not much that could help me. So I made a couple of small sketches on the back of some receipt, and that was it. The original image was made, completely free-hand, on my family's yearly Christmas card for 2012. It took a couple of weeks to draw it, in pen & ink, but I was happy with the result.
It was only when I blew up the drawing for other uses that I saw that as crisp as my lines looked on paper, they were rough and uneven at larger sizes. In September of 2013, I used my monogram for a screen print. Because the print was larger, I projected the drawing and guessed my way around the pixels. Then I used a curve to perfect it. What you see here is the final product, in oil, on acetate, with which I exposed my screen. It measures about 8"x10".
Oh, and if it goes without saying, for my other work, this piece is absolutely copyrighted. This is my monogram, exclusive to me. If you have similar initials, or if you just want a monogram of your own, contact me.
