Architecture | Concordia Logo

I was recently elected as one of two undergraduate co-directors of Architecture | Concordia, an architectural journal for Concordia University, now entering its second year of publication. A|C is also a small group of dedicated and passionate individuals who organize a speaker series, featuring key figures in the realms of architecture and urbanism. I invite you to join our lively Facebook group

Anyway, as a young and small entity, A|C is still developing as a brand. I hope to be the creative spearhead of this development. My first order of business has been to design a logo. There is an old SCTV skit in which Rick Moranis remarks that there is something which all successful brands share: "recognizable, economical, attractive symbols ... or LO-GOS". Although the skit is highly satirical, Moranis makes a good point. A logo would unify our publications, advertise our events, and be especially important if we move to develop a website. No decision has yet been made but I hope I will win the support of my fellow directors.

The logo I designed has the sort of bold, dynamic form and stylized recessional space which is wholly appropriate to a architecture-centric entity. My inspiration came not from architecture, however, but from origami — a different manipulation of planes. I was watching Blade Runner, for the millionth time, admiring E. J. Olmos's character's paper unicorn. The next day, at work, I began playing around with some scrap paper on my desk — folding strips of it. I began to see stylized letters form, and before long, I had something like the logo you see here. Of course, the fine tuning took several hours and more careful measurements.

Curious how I did it? Watch the GIF below!

This logo was completed September 8, 2015, and currently exists as a vector.
