Monograms make everything feel more official. I have being using one since 2013 on all of my stationary. You can see it here. I designed that old monogram in admiration of the cyphers of seventeenth-century calligraphers. While I still have a tremendous appreciation for flourished penmanship, I decided that that aesthetic was no longer in keeping with the Tom Collins brand.
The shift to the current design only just occurred, but I have been planning it since the spring of 2014, when I created the motivational card series Money & the Power. Those cards, which espouse a hyper-masculine approach to business, were stamped with a fitting symbol of power a bull with a sun-disk. You can read more about that series here. The sun-disk, ironically a symbol of the earth, is one of the most ancient and striking of all symbols. But more importantly, I noticed that by cutting out a quarter of the disk, one ends up with a superimposed T (+) and C, my initials.
These days, I am doing a lot of graphic and web design and I tell my clients that high-impact is my specialty. Updating my monogram was a way of showing that I practice what I preach. My old design was striking in its own way, but this one is striking period. No equivocation. And I like that it evokes a crosshair, because I am details-orientated, and make sure my designs are on point.
This monogram was designed between 6 January and 20 February 2016.
