A little break from the beauty. I saw a plaster cast of this funerary sculpture, by Ligier Richier, when I was in Paris, last year. It was a cold April day, and it was pouring rain. In fact, the weather suited my mood (I think I was a little homesick by that point). I was staying next to the Eiffel Tower, and decided to walk up to the Trocadéro. The museum of architectural history was eerily quiet — I was one of the few people there. It was OK, but I was just having one of those days where I was not into anything. Then I saw this piece, and it changed everything. At least, it did until I got home and discovered that half my photographs had been corrupted.
Anyway, this one was alright, and it works well in this style. Not only that, but the theme is a foil to all the other pieces. Earthly flesh perishes like earthly fruit — I tell myself that every day. It can be done as a print or as a painting. Completed June 11, 2012.
