I began collecting pictures of my favourite models and clothes a year or two ago. No, my bedroom wall is not covered in Vogue cut-outs with hearts around them. Come to think of it, for an artist, my room is rather barren. I have only one work on display: Miles Aldridge's Immaculée #3. What I have is mostly a collection of digital images, saved from various places, like The Fashion Spot. It began as a way for me to keep track of items I want to collect, but quickly evolved as a source of inspiration, and then my primary resource for this entire b&w series. This photograph, upon which my drawing is based, was one of the first I ever saved.
It's my favourite model, Snejana Onopka, with a rose. Read into the rose what you will. I would love to have more of Snejana in my series, but her delicate features don't usually translate well into this style. This was something of a miracle, and is now tied for my favourite piece in the series. It's also my first ever digital drawing. It measures 9"x12".
Normally, I take an image, reduce it to black and white, draw it in pencil, fill it in with ink, erase the pencil, scan the drawing, boost the contrast, photoshop the imperfections in colour, and print the result. That seemed a little redundant. I decided that working straight on the computer would save a lot of unnecessary labour — I was right. 'Painting' pixel by pixel also allowed me to get way more detail than pen&ink, and in way less time. Not to mention, I could actually see the details, with the ability to zoom! Just to give you an idea, drawing this by hand would have taken a few months, on the computer, it took me a couple of weeks. I completed it January 9, 2013. It can be done as a painting.
