Distorted Self Portrait

When I applied to Ecole Parsons à Paris, they required a few made-to-order pieces, in addition to my existing portfolio. Basically, the idea with this one was to blow my nose and blow their mind. Just kidding. It was very challenging, trying to imagine a background that wouldn't distract from the foreground. Ultimately, I decided to try and draw my workspace (my desk), but blurred, the way the eye might see it, if looking at the vase in real life. This was exceedingly difficult. I have never tried anything like it, and if you try drawing something you aren't focussed on, you will see what I mean. I believe it worked well, though.* It is all 2B graphite on 100 lb. paper, and was completed February 22, 2012.

*I was accepted on a $63 000 scholarship, if that's anything to go by.

Here's an earlier version, without the background.
