This is the work that got me into pen and ink, and then into print. This was also the first work of art I ever sold. It goes by a number of names: Got Coke?, The White Lady, but it's real title is the one used here. It's based on a work by Christopher Dombres, whose work I greatly admire for its wit. I'm not sure what Dombres's version was inspired by, but I think it might be a play on "Got Milk," a nutrition campaign in the late nineties, and naughties. So instead of the indexical milk moustache, you get the notorious bloody nose.
Although I get a lot of weird looks, and concerned comments from people, I swear, I just chose this piece because I liked its bold simplicity. I didn't like how Dombres had used a coloured background, however, and I simplified it. I also removed the text "Got Coke?" which features on his. The piece speaks for itself. Now you might be thinking I'm cheeky, for so closely paralleling Dombres's work, but considering that his entire career is based on re-appropriation and fighting copyright, I think I'm right on.
This piece was first done as a 8.5"x11" pen&ink drawing, in August of 2009, but I have also made countless stickers of it, and a few larger (3'x4') paintings. It is by far my most popular work.
