To say that I truly hate instagram would be somewhat of an exaggeration. I can appreciate that it promotes creativity amongst those who would not normally feel that they have a voice. However, I also believe it is incredibly lazy, formulaic, and overused.
A few years ago, I bought my first SLR, a Nikkormat FT2, and a Nikkor 50mm F1.2 lens. A couple months after that, I bought my first DSLR, a Nikon D1X. Laugh if you will, but that is all I could afford. I wanted something solid and dependable, and I didn't care too much about megapixels (which is good, because iphones have more). I still use both, and they serve me well, as an amateur. The thing I don't like about instagram is that it will deliver an effect in a couple of seconds, that would take me much longer to create with either of my cameras. No, it won't be nearly as good, but on facebook, you can't really tell. So what ends up happening is that instagram pictures make my photography look relatively worse. Needless to say that this self portrait does not use it.
I wanted to commemorate my being fully suited (a rare occasion), in an outfit that has taken three years to assemble. It's all Dior Homme, a passion of mine. I am not actually the photographer here — my younger brother was. He didn't use my camera either. He blurred it, but I figured that I could still play around with it. Taken December 25, 2012.
